When we begin to pay attention to our bodies, minds and hearts, it's inevitable that we will touch some of the more challenging parts of ourselves.

Perhaps we'll witness the fiery nature of our reactivity or observe ourselves choosing self-destructive habits over our good intentions. This is what scares some people off from mindfulness. Many will choose the blissful ignorance of moving through life without awareness.

The trouble is, it’s actually not so blissful because the very things that we're afraid to look at, end up taking the driver's seat of our lives and creating quite a bit of pain for ourselves and others. Real change is only possible through compassionate acceptance and self-awareness. 

This is what it means to wake up.

Instead of getting lost in thought, the process of waking up invites us to pay attention moment to moment, notice our surroundings and experience the sensations within and all around us.

So, although mindfulness is not always comfortable, its benefits are worth it in the end. As Brené Brown says,

We cannot selectively numb emotions, when we numb the painful emotions, we also numb the positive emotions.” 

By bravely opening to the present moment we can more joyfully savor the gifts in our lives and take better care of ourselves in times of struggle.
